The 23rd Biennale of Alexandria

Alexandria, 1 December 2005—The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is hosting The 23rd Biennale of Alexandria for Plastic Arts under the theme of “Transparency of Universe… Magic of the Mediterranean”, 1-3 December 2005. The biennale aims to create a special vision in countries with similar geography and environment.
The biennale, brings together more than 80 artists from 16 Mediterranean country including: Algeria, Bosnia, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Spain, Syria, Tunisia, and Turkey.
Over the course of three days, four themes will be explored focusing on Myth and Philosophy; Soul and Character of the Mediterranean; Biennale of Alexandria in Half a Century: experiences of countries; and Future Horizons. The concluding session will include a roundtable discussion on a panorama for future of art in the Mediterranean countries. The roundtable discussion will be chaired by the artist and Doctor Ahmed Nawar and the artist, Ahmed Fouad Selim, the participants include John Hubert Martin from Germany, Claudine Dusaulier from France, and Mohamed Rafik Khalil from Egypt.
Along the biennale there will be five prizes under the name of “Alexandria Golden Beacon”; a certificate of acclamation for the best exhibiting country; as well as a pavilion for the golden prize awardees in the previous competitions.
An exhibition will be accompanying the biennale, which will continue till the end of the month, it is dedicated to works by winners of previous competitions, as well as participants from several Mediterranean cities.
It is worth noting that this year the biennale is celebrating its golden jubilee since it was inaugurated in 1955 by the former President Gamal Abdel Nasser, by producing a compact disc documenting all the exhibitions since its inauguration.
