Alexandria, 21 July 2005—The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) launched the new Public Information Center (PIC), in collaboration with the World Bank, on Tuesday, 19 July. The event witnessed the signing of the agreement between Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and Mr. Emmanuel Mbi, World Bank Egypt, Yemen and Djibouti Country Director. This comes within the BA’s mission of being a center of excellence in the production and dissemination of knowledge and being a place of dialogue, learning and understanding between cultures and peoples.

A celebration took place in the presence of many business, academic, NGO and civil society members. During the event, Mr. Mbi stated that the PIC is more than a conventional library containing books and publications. It is also an efficient tool of disseminating knowledge, sharing development-related information and it will be a gathering place for public discussions on development topics. Dr. Serageldin also affirmed the importance of partnerships with the World Bank, as it is an organization that plays a great role in development worldwide.

Within the signed agreement, the PIC will contain all the World Bank’s documents and reports, available free-of-charge to the general public. They include Project Information Documents, Project Appraisal Documents, Economic Sector Reports, loan agreements, bidding and consultant documents and UN Development Business publications.

The Center is located on the second floor in the Main Reading Hall of the BA, and assistance will be provided to the users by the PIC’s specialized staff at its information desk.
