Inauguration of the Second International Forum on Calligraphy, Writing, and Inscriptions

Alexandria, 24 April 2005—Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), inaugurated the Second International Forum on Calligraphy, Writing, and Inscriptions, 24-26 April, organized by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Calligraphy Center. Among the attendants were Professor Sa’ad al-Rashid, Deputy Minister of Archaeology and Museums, Saudi Arabia; Professor Abdelhalim Nureldin, Director of the Calligraphy Center; and Dr. Khaled Azab, Deputy Director of the Center.

During the opening session, Dr. Serageldin shed light on the importance of collaboration with international organizations and of benefiting from their experiences. He added that in collaboration with the High Council for Archeology, chaired by Dr. Zahi Hawas, the BA was able to establish a database for digitized calligraphy and inscriptions available in Alexandria, publish a periodical on the research done by the Calligraphy Center, and prepare a website that will be launched next year.

In his speech, Professor Abdelhalim Nureldin, pointed out that the Forum brings together many researchers in the field of calligraphy studies from the Middle East, Europe, USA, Far East, as well as from Egypt. He concluded with his thanks to all who helped organize the Forum and mainly the UNESCO for its support.

The Forum aims at studying the evolution of human knowledge of inscriptions since the pre-historic eras. Over the course of three days, sessions will explore a variety of topics among which are: “The writings on coins from the mint of Alexandria in the Islamic era”, “Abbreviations in Ancient Egyptian script”, “Writing decorations on the means of lighting from the Mamelouk period— A study in form and content”, and “Some astronomical hieroglyphs and their cosmographic significance”.
