Official inauguration of the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for the Dialogue between Cultures

Alexandria, 20 April 2005—Wednesday, 20 April, witnesses the official inauguration of the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for the Dialogue between Cultures, under the auspices of H.E. Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak. It is organized by the Presidency of the European Union and will take place at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The official launching event, 18-20 April, includes a series of discussions and cultural activities, as well as a music festival with musicians and singers from many parts of the Euro-Mediterranean region.
A large number of distinguished personalities from political and intellectual life in all 35 Euro-Mediterranean countries is expected to participate, among them are the foreign and culture ministers of Sweden and Luxemburg as well as the European Commissioner of external relations.
During the afternoon and evening of 20 April, the “Fiesta del Mar“ or "Farah el Bahr”, an open-air musical festival, will be held till midnight at Qait Bey Fortress. Musicians from all over the region will present contemporary popular music resulting from centuries of mutual cultural enrichment in the Euro-Mediterranean region.
The first day of the launching event, 18 April, included a series of meetings and discussions. Tuesday, 19 April, witnessed an Intellectual Forum with the topic “Unity in Diversity: The implications of the international debate on cultural diversity for Euro-Mediterranean Co-operation”.
During the Forum, interventions were presented by Assia Bensalah Alaoui; and Malek Chebel, Algerian-born anthropologist living in Paris, France. It was moderated by Dr. Traugott Schoefthaler, Executive Director of the Foundation.
The Foundation, named after the late Swedish Foreign Minister, was created by the 25 Member States of the European Union and their ten Mediterranean partners as an instrument of the Barcelona Process and with the general objective of developing partnership in social, cultural and human affairs, and in particular, for developing human resources, promoting understanding between cultures and exchanges between civil societies.
