Mrs. Mubarak in Copenhagen for HCA bicentenary celebration

Alexandria, 7 April 2005—H.E. Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, First Lady of Egypt and Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), was invited, as Honorary Hans Christian Andersen (HCA) Ambassador, to attend the celebration of the bicentenary of the famous Danish writer, HCA, in Copenhagen, 1-3 April 2005. Ambassador Taher Khalifa, Head, External Relations Sector at BA, accompanied her on behalf of Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, who was also appointed as HCA Ambassador.
The celebration comprised a number of events illustrating the life and works of HCA. During the celebration, many issues were discussed including the Reading for All project, sponsored by Mrs. Mubarak, as well as the program of eliminating illiteracy of adults and children.
On Thursday, 13 January 2005, BA organized celebration of the bicentenary of HCA, it was attended by H.R.H. Prince Joachim of Denmark, where Mrs. Mubarak was appointed as Honorary Ambassador.
Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish writer who combined folk legends, moral teachings and humor with his own great imagination and produced fairy-tales that were not merely meant for children but for adults as well. Among some of his famous writings are The Ugly Duckling, The Little Mermaid, and The Princess and the Pea.
