Shakespeare Festival and works of Bach at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina

Alexandria, 6 April 2005—The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) Arts Center is organizing a series of musical and cultural events during the month of April. The program includes a concert for the works of the Bach family by the Geneva Quintet and a violin recital featuring Shady Abdel Salam and Yasser Farghali, playing works of Handel, Leclair, and Bériot.

In cooperation with Instituto Cervantes, the BA Arts Center is organizing a piano duet presenting works of Ravel and Albeniz, by the soloists María José De Bustos and María José Barandiaran. Moreover, the BA Chamber Orchestra is participating in a guitar concert conducted by Mostafa Nagy featuring the soloists Karim Frège, Emad Hamdi, and Hossam Shafei. Khaled El Shweikh is conducting the BA Chamber Orchestra in a concert, where they will present works of Johann Sebastian Bach, Handel, and Mendelssohn. He will also join them as a violin soloist.

The program also includes a celebration dedicated to the artist Mahmoud Reda, a pioneer of folkloric dance theater in Egypt, entitled Mahmoud Reda, the people’s artist … 50 years of creativity and singularity. The month will also witness the celebration of the birthday of William Shakespeare, where three films based on his famous novels including King Lear, Hamlet, and Titus, will be screened.

Finally the Imagining the Book Biennale II Exhibition, with the theme of "Above, Below & in the Sahara Desert", will be held at BA with the participation of more than 50 Arab, African, and western artists. It is comprised of three main activities: the exhibition itself; an international workshop; and an international seminar.
