Three New Research Centers

The BA Board of Trustees (BoT) has recently approved establishing three new research centers, namely: the Coptic Studies Center, the Islamic Civilization Studies Center, and the Environmental Studies Center. The Coptic Studies Center aims to spread public awareness about this largely unknown era of Egyptian history, and stress the fact that Coptic heritage is a heritage of all Egyptians. The Islamic Civilization Center focuses on the contributions of Muslim scientists, scholars, researchers and intellectuals in the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as the Islamic heritage of that era. The Environmental Studies Center focuses on environmental research in the region in the context of climate change and rise of pollution rates. The 3 research centers are a continuation of previous work done at the BA in these domains.

Forthcoming

Eratosthenes 2013 (20 June 2013)

Eratosthenes Festivity has become an annual tradition that takes place every year at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the city of Aswan. It is designed for preparatory school students, and includes a series of activities that revolve around the methodology Eratosthenes used in measuring the Earth’s circumference 2000 years ago. On the day of summer solstice, school students will conduct Eratosthenes’ experiment at the BA Plaza and in Aswan (Upper Egypt) to measure the circumference of the earth. Other countries around the world like France, Argentina, and Spain will join the Festivity through the videoconferencing facility. The Festivity comprises a fieldtrip to Elephantine island in Aswan, interactive workshops, lectures, contests, and videoconferencing between Alexandria, Aswan and other countries to compare measurement results.
