BA young users awarded in Future Programmers Competition

Alexandria, 28 August 2005—Saturday, 27 August, witnessed the presenting of several awards to the users of the Children’s Library and Young People’s Library of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), in the award ceremony of the “Future Programmers Competition” for youngsters.
The competition, conducted and organized by the Information Technology Institute at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, aimed to promote innovation and computer skill enhancement among youngsters. It consisted of a set of tasks that depended on the age group. Tasks included the design of an Internet site, a short film, computer software or game, a poster/card or a presentation using several computer programs such as FrontPage, Flash, 3DMAX, Java, PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop and others.
Two groups from the Children’s Library won the fourth prize in the category for children aged 10-12 years, with their design of PowerPoint presentations titled “Library of Alexandria” and “Space”.
Two groups from the Young People’s Library participated in the category for youngsters aged 13-15 years, and came in second and sixth place for the design of a website of a youth magazine and for a website about “The Solar System”, respectively. In addition, a group within the category for youngsters aged 16-18 years, achieved second place for the design of a website titled “Around the World”, and another group achieved fourth place for their design of a short film entitled “The Environment”. The awards are both monetary and scholarship awards.
The ceremony took place at the Arab Academy for Science and Technology (AAST) and was attended by Dr. Tarek Mohamed Kamel Mahmoud, Minister of Communication and Information; Dr. Sohair Wastawy, Chief Librarian at the BA, as well as many BA Library staff members.
The BA plans to hold a ceremony for its young winners to celebrate their success, and encourage the enhancement of their information and communication technology skills.
