The Bibliotheca Alexandrina has released its latest documentary production, Peseshet... The First Egyptian Female Physician, which highlights ancient Egypt's pioneering role in medical science. The documentary takes viewers on a fascinating visual journey that combines the philosophy of healing with professional medical expertise, revealing how Egypt was the cradle of science in the ancient world. The film is part of the project “Aref... Your Origin is Your Future.”
The documentary takes viewers on a journey through the life of Peseshet, whose name is immortalized on the “false door” in her son's tomb as the “lady overseer of female physicians,” and highlights the medical system of her era.
The film also traces the impact of this legacy, referring to the discovery of Peseshet’s stele by Egyptian archaeologist Selim Hassan in 1932, and how Egypt became a destination for medical treatment in the New Kingdom.
It concludes with a quote by Egyptian medical pioneer and writer Dr. Mohamed Kamal Hussein, who accurately described this cultural development when he said, “For the ancient Egyptians, medicine was a turning point between the art of healing and the science of medicine.”
The film is available on "Aref" official website or through the "Aref" playlist on the BA official YouTube channel in the following links:
