Environmental Physics: Radiation and Environmental Protection program

Alexandria, 5 July 2005—A summer course about radiation and environmental protection is organized at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), within the celebrations of 2005, which was declared the International Year of Physics.
The lectures are presented by Dr. Aladdin Abdul-latif, Associate Professor of Physics at the German University in Cairo, and Professor Mohamed El Nashai, Egyptian Professor of Physics.
The course revolves around radiation, low frequency electric and magnetic fields, laser and ultraviolet sources and aims to provide a thorough grounding in radiation protection. It also shows how the technical and organizational procedures of the discipline are applicable to the broader concepts of environmental protection.
The discussions will lay emphasis on ionizing radiation. However microwaves, low frequency electric and magnetic fields, lasers and ultraviolet sources are also covered to give an insight into the field of non-ionizing radiation. The substantial practical element of the course leads to the student being able to relate taught material to its real-world application.
The course will cover the following subjects: Radiation Physics, Detection and Dosimetry, Radiation Biology, Environmental Physics, Radiation Protection, Environmental Protection, Non-Ionizing Radiation and Nuclear Power. The practical work is supplanted by taught material in the form of brief lectures on statistics, computing and laboratory techniques which will be conducted in the Faculty of Agriculture, Alexandria University. The course lasts for four weeks and the last week is dedicated to evaluation.
