Open Science Seminar Conclusion

The BA Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) organized a free seminar entitled “Open Science: Unlocking Barriers to Research”, on Tuesday, 23 May 2023, with the participation of Dr. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the BA; Dr. Mahmoud Sakr, President of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT); Dr. Amr Adel Adly, President of Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST); Dr. Nizar Hassan, UNESCO’s Senior Science and Technology Advisor for the Arab States; and Dr. Yousry El-Gamal, former Minister of Education.

The seminar was inaugurated by Dr. Ahmed Zayed, who addressed in his opening speech the significant role of the BA in providing universal access to knowledge, as the BA took the lead in providing several databases, electronic resources and scientific journals.

Dr. Yousry El-Gamal began his presentation with an introduction to open science, and referred to it as being part of the movement that aims to promote freedom and transparency in the access to science, arts and culture, while Dr. Mahmoud Sakr reviewed the efforts of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology in supporting open science. For his part, Dr. Amr Adly touched on the world’s adoption of more open policies with regard to open science.

Additionally, Dr. Nizar Hassan presented UNESCO's recommendations on open science, which emphasize the importance of free access to scientific research resources across different fields.

The seminar concluded with a discussion on the main challenges facing institutions concerning the adoption of open science policies.
