Third BioVision Conference held at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina

Posted on

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is hosting the BioVision Alexandria Conference, 3-6 April 2004, in partnership with the World Life Science Forum BioVision. The conference aims to blend new and old ideas in the fields of Biosciences by being an all-embracing examination of the relationships between New Life Sciences and development. The main objective of the conference is to review the collective experience and thoughts of some of the world"s leading scientists, regarding topics such as health, food, agriculture, biodiversity and environment. In addition, special sessions will look into ethics, patents, and the poor. The conference also includes a Nobel Day, held on 3rd April, bringing together four Nobel laureates, as well as an accompanying book fair, from 3-6 April, comprised of publishers and organizations active in biosciences and related subjects.

The first BioVision Alexandria conference was held in 2002, entitled the Egyptian Biotechnology Conference, to be held every even year. It therefore alternates with its sister conference, BioVision.

As we unlock the secrets of life, and learn to manipulate the very building blocks of heredity, who is to be the judge of when what is feasible technically is no longer acceptable ethically? It is natural that we should address ethics, patents and the poor in this important gathering. Discussions on ethics and biotechnology will examine questions of moral responsibility, limitations and boundaries that should be set on research and practical applications, as well as exclusivity versus the sharing of knowledge.
