Opening of the Legacy of Volta Exhibition

Alexandria—The Inaugural Ceremony of “The Legacy of Volta: From the Battery to Photovoltaic Electricity” Exhibition was held at the BA Auditorium on Monday, 9 November 2009.

The Ceremony included opening speeches by Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria; Engineer Hoda El-Mikaty, Director of the BA Planetarium Science Center (PSC); Professor Tarek Hussein, President of the Academy for Scientific Research and Technology; Dr. Stefano Mistretta, Consul of Italy in Alexandria; and Professor Franco Porcelli, Scientific Attaché, Embassy of Italy in Cairo.

Professor Roberto Schmid, Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies, Pavia, Italy, gave a keynote speech, in which he called for “science for people”, as science can contribute to the progress of the society and improve the quality of life. In his speech, Professor Lucio Fregonese, University of Pavia, and Curator of the Exhibition, spoke of Volta’s great contribution to electricity and the legacy of Volta nowadays.

During the Ceremony, the Italian Consul donated several books to the BA in Italian and English, including Electra Marconi’s book Marconi, My Beloved.

It is worth mentioning that “The Legacy of Volta” Exhibition crowns the activities of the Egypt Italy Science Year 2009. The Exhibition goes on until 3 December 2009.
