The Nobel Section at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina hosts the 1st Calligraphy Center Seminar

The Nobel Section, donated by the Scandinavian Committee of the Friends of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, will host the first seminar organized by the BA Calligraphy Center on Tuesday 25th June. This seminar is the first activity of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina to be held in the Nobel Section.

This two-days seminar will be attended by a number of intellects and specialists concerned with calligraphy in the ancient and modern civilizations.

The opening speech will be delivered by Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director General of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, to focus on the goals that the Center aims to achieve and its purposes as well as the relation between the BA building with its surrounding wall and the Calligraphy Center.

Dr. Abd El Halim Nour El Din will talk about his vision on the role of the Calligraphy Center in the field of calligraphy studies in ancient Egypt. Another speech will be delivered by Dr. Abd El Rahman Al Ansary about the suggested role of the Center in the studies of the Arabian Peninsula writings and inscriptions. Dr. Bahgat El Kobeissy will deliver a special lecture to explain the hypothesis that differences in calligraphy styles does not imply difference in the language.

The seminar will include two forums; the first will focus on the role of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Calligraphy Center in the area of writings and inscriptions in the ancient world. The second forum, chaired by Dr. Makarem El Ghamry, will focus on the contemporary languages and the study of the styles of their calligraphy.

Dr. Mohamed El Gamal will talk about “The Inscriptions and Writings Exhibition on the Walls of Alhambra Palace”. Researcher Frederick Souden will give a talk on Islamic inscriptions, whereas Dr. Abd El Moneim Abd El Halim will discuss the evolution of alphabets.

Dr. Raafat El Nabarawy, Dean of the Faculty of Archaeology - Cairo University, along with other researchers from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, France and Syria will also participate in this seminar.
